Careers in Accounting and Finance at Level 6
Financial reporting, audit, markets and risk for people who already keep the numbers and want to be trusted to interpret them.
The fieldWhere degree-level work sits
Accounting and finance is a field with two ladders side by side. One is the professional ladder of the chartered and certified bodies, climbed by examination and supervised experience, whose titles are protected and whose members sign off accounts. The other is the organisational ladder: assistant, analyst, controller, manager, head of function, climbed by competence and trust inside a business. Degree-level study is expected on the second ladder from the analyst grade upward, and is one of several accepted starting points for the first. A Level 6 diploma belongs firmly to the second ladder, and can shorten the approach to the first.
Roles that ordinarily ask for study at this level
- Financial analyst or management accountant in a company finance team, preparing budgets, forecasts and performance reports for managers
- Assistant controller or finance manager in a small or medium-sized business, responsible for the month-end close and the relationship with external auditors
- Internal audit or assurance officer, testing controls and reporting to an audit committee
- Treasury, investment or risk assistant in a financial-services firm, supporting decisions on funding, liquidity and exposure
- Business partner roles where finance sits alongside operations and translates numbers into decisions
The diplomaWhat Level 6 adds
For someone already doing bookkeeping, payroll or accounts-preparation work, the diploma's contribution is the analytical layer that the job has not yet demanded: reading a set of accounts as evidence about a business, judging an audit approach, weighing a financing option against its risk, and writing all of that up for a reader who will act on it. Those are the habits that mark the analyst and controller grades, and the six assignments are direct rehearsals of them.
The diploma also gives a career changer from a non-financial role a documented body of Level 6 work in the subject, which is the thing a finance director looks for before trusting someone with a budget. It is not an accounting qualification in the professional sense, and it does not license anyone to audit or to sign accounts.
