Careers in Logistics and Supply Chain at Level 6

Procurement, planning, international movement and project management, for coordinators and supervisors who want to manage the chain rather than a link of it.

The fieldWhere degree-level work sits

Logistics and supply chain management rewards experience more visibly than most fields; the people who run warehouses, fleets and procurement functions have usually risen from the floor, the cab or the desk. What has changed over the past two decades is the analytical demand at the middle grades. Planning, procurement and international movement are now data-driven, contractually complex and exposed to risk in ways that a good coordinator feels but may not have the tools to model. Degree-level study is expected at the point where someone stops running a link in the chain and starts designing the chain, and it is at that point that this diploma is usually taken.

Roles that ordinarily ask for study at this level

  • Supply chain planner or demand planner balancing forecasts, inventory and service levels across a network
  • Procurement or category manager negotiating and managing supplier contracts and sourcing strategy
  • Logistics or distribution manager running transport, warehousing and fulfilment operations
  • Import and export or international logistics manager handling customs, compliance and multimodal movement
  • Supply chain project manager delivering system implementations, network changes or new-market entries
  • Operations manager in a third-party logistics provider or a manufacturer's supply function

The diplomaWhat Level 6 adds

The OTHM Logistics and Supply Chain Management diploma covers the planning and control of a chain, strategic procurement, global and international logistics, and project management, with an entrepreneurship unit that asks the learner to think like the owner of the business rather than an employee of it. For a coordinator or supervisor, the assignments are an opportunity to analyse their own operation as a system: where inventory hides, where risk sits, where a supplier relationship is really a dependency. Learners in this field tend to produce assignments their employers ask to read.

For a career changer, the diploma is a structured introduction to a field that otherwise has no obvious entry point for adults: the vocabulary, the frameworks, the regulatory landscape of international movement, and a project management unit that transfers to almost any role.
