Careers in Education and Teaching at Level 6
Pedagogy, curriculum, classroom practice and inclusion, for teachers and trainers who want their craft examined and certificated at bachelor's level.
The fieldWhere degree-level work sits
Education is a heavily regulated field in the state sector and a lightly regulated one everywhere else. Teaching in a state school in England requires qualified teacher status, obtained through initial teacher training that these diplomas are not. Teaching in independent schools, international schools, further education, adult and community learning, corporate training and early years settings is governed by the employer and, sometimes, by a local regulator, and there the question is more often whether the candidate has studied teaching at degree level than whether they hold a particular licence. The diplomas here address that question, and the Qualifi programmes address it for a specific international context.
Roles that ordinarily ask for study at this level
- Teacher or lead practitioner in an international or independent school where the employer sets its own qualification requirements
- Lecturer or trainer in further education, adult learning or a private training provider, teaching a vocational subject already held
- Learning and development specialist or corporate trainer designing and delivering training programmes in an organisation
- Early years lead or room leader moving into curriculum and pedagogy responsibilities
- Curriculum developer, instructional designer or education technologist supporting teachers with materials and platforms
- Special educational needs coordinator or inclusion lead in settings where the role does not require a statutory qualification
The diplomaWhat Level 6 adds
For an experienced teacher or trainer without a degree in education, the diploma turns craft into examined practice: lesson design defended against learning theory, classroom management analysed rather than described, curriculum decisions justified, technology evaluated rather than adopted. The OTHM Teaching and Learning diploma does this across six general units; the Qualifi Global Teaching Practice awards do it through a professional placement and, in the extended diploma, through four further units written for schools in the Gulf region.
For a subject specialist who has fallen into teaching, in a college, a training room or overseas, the diploma supplies the pedagogical grounding that was never formally acquired, and a body of assessed work about real classrooms that an employer can read. It can also be the Level 6 credit on which an application to a top-up in education studies, or to a Level 7 award, is built.
