The programmeWhat this diploma is

This is the larger of Qualifi's two Global Teaching Practice awards, and the one whose specialist units reveal most clearly the context it was written for. To the three units shared with the diploma, on teaching and learning theory, evidence-based practice and a professional placement, it adds four: Arabic Language Pedagogy, Early Years Pedagogy, Moral Education, and Special Educational Needs and Disability. Together they describe the curriculum expectations of schools in the Gulf states, where regulators have increasingly required teachers to hold a subject degree and a Level 6 teaching credential covering these areas.

Its 120 credits place it, on the RQF, at Level 6 under Ofqual regulation. Like the smaller diploma it presumes a graduate: entry requires an undergraduate degree in a curriculum subject and IELTS Academic 6.0. It is a professional credential, not a first degree-level qualification, and its holders are teachers with a degree who have now been trained and assessed in the practice of teaching.

The extended diploma suits those who know where they intend to teach and what its regulator asks. For applicants uncertain between the two awards, the difference is straightforward: the diploma is the core credential; the extended diploma is the core plus the specialist units a particular regulatory context expects.

StructureUnits and credits

Seven mandatory units; no optional units. Titles as published by Qualifi.2 Qualifi's specification gives the credit for each unit; the published total is shown in the particulars.

The three core units run first and in the same sequence as the diploma, with the placement as their culmination. The four specialist units follow, ordinarily in the order Moral Education, Special Educational Needs and Disability, Early Years Pedagogy and Arabic Language Pedagogy, though a learner already teaching in early years or in Arabic-medium settings may take those units earlier so that placement evidence can be used. The Arabic Language Pedagogy unit is about the teaching of Arabic; it does not require the learner to be fluent in Arabic, though it helps.

AdmissionEntry requirements

Qualifi sets the entry criteria; LSPM applies them. As published:2

  • These qualifications are aimed at graduates and have been designed to be accessible without artificial barriers that restrict access and progression.
  • However, candidates must meet local regulatory requirements.
  • Entry to the qualification will be through centre application and interview.
  • Learners will be assessed on an individual basis.Candidates must have an undergraduate degree in a relevant curriculum subject.
  • They must also have attained IELTS Academic 6.0 (a minimum of 6 in reading and writing and 5.5 in speaking and listening).

The entry requirements are Qualifi's and are the same as for the diploma: a bachelor's degree in a relevant curriculum subject, IELTS Academic 6.0 with component minimums, an interview, and compliance with local regulatory requirements. Because the extended diploma is usually taken with a specific regulator's requirements in view, LSPM asks applicants at interview to name the jurisdiction and, if possible, the school, so that the award can be confirmed as a fit before they commit to it. A placement school must be secured before registration.

If you are unsure which route applies to you, enquire and say so; working that out is what the advice call is for.

MethodHow you are assessed

The core units are assessed as for the diploma: written assignments on theory and evidence-based practice, and a placement portfolio of observed lessons, mentor reports and reflective commentary. The four specialist units are each assessed by assignment against Qualifi's criteria, typically a scheme of work or unit plan in the specialism with a research-informed rationale, an analysis of practice observed or delivered, and, for the special educational needs unit, an individual support plan built on a case. Where the placement school allows, specialist-unit assignments draw on placement evidence.

The general arrangements for marking, moderation, feedback and resubmission are described on the how LSPM teaches page.

Time, honestly estimated

Qualifi does not publish a Total Qualification Time for this award; the figures below use the 120-credit convention of ten hours per credit as a planning guide, not a promise.

AfterwardsProgression

Progression is professional. Holders typically seek or hold posts in international schools where a subject degree and a Level 6 teaching credential covering early years, inclusion, moral education and language pedagogy are expected by the regulator. Whether the award satisfies a particular regulator, and for which posts, is that regulator's decision; confirm it before enrolling rather than after.

Holders considering a master's in education generally apply on their undergraduate degree, with this award and their teaching record as professional evidence. The extended diploma is not designed as a bachelor's top-up route and its holders rarely need one.

The mechanics of advanced standing, and the questions admissions tutors ask, are on the top-up degrees page.4 Slot: universities holding a current progression agreement for this award, verified before publication.

Not everyone wants the bachelor's. The other direction from here is a Level 7 diploma, at master's level, described on the companion site for Level 7 diplomas.

FitWho it suits, and who it does not

A good fit if you

  • hold a degree in a curriculum subject and are taking, or preparing for, a teaching post in an international school, particularly in the Gulf;
  • need a credential that covers early years, special educational needs, moral education and Arabic language pedagogy because your school or its regulator expects it;
  • can secure a placement school and meet the English-language requirement.

A poor fit if you

  • do not hold a degree; the award adds to one and does not stand in for one;
  • intend to teach in a context where the specialist units are irrelevant; the 90-credit diploma is the more sensible choice;
  • want qualified teacher status in England or a licence in any jurisdiction as a guaranteed outcome; the award confers neither.

QuestionsAsked about this programme

Do I need to speak Arabic for the Arabic Language Pedagogy unit?

The unit is about how Arabic is taught and learned, and its assignments concern pedagogy rather than the learner's own proficiency. Fluency is not an entry requirement. Learners who do not speak Arabic complete it with the support of the school's Arabic department and the unit's own materials, though they may find it the most demanding of the seven.

Can I start with the diploma and upgrade to the extended diploma later?

Yes. The three core units are common, and a holder of the diploma can complete the four specialist units to be certificated for the extended diploma, subject to Qualifi's registration rules and time limits. Tell LSPM your intention at the start so that you are registered appropriately.

Is the placement longer for the extended diploma?

The Professional Placement unit is the same unit in both awards, with the same requirements. The extended diploma's additional units may draw on placement evidence but do not extend the placement itself, unless you choose to remain in the school while completing them.

Which regulators recognise this award?

This page does not publish a list, because recognition decisions belong to the regulators and change. Applicants should obtain confirmation from the authority in the jurisdiction where they intend to teach, quoting the Ofqual number 603/6815/9, before enrolling on the strength of it.

How does 'Moral Education' fit a non-religious school?

The unit concerns the teaching of ethics, character, citizenship and cultural understanding as a curriculum area, reflecting programmes that several Gulf states have introduced in all schools. It is about pedagogy and curriculum design in that area, not the promotion of any particular belief.

Documents and application

Applications are made on London School of Planning and Management's own website, not this site; this site is LSPM's independent recruitment agent. Most people enquire first; the apply link is for those who have already had that conversation.
